School Based Decision Making Council
The Chenoweth Elementary PTA will hold the election of a parent representative for our SBDM (School-Based Decision Making) Council via an online survey running May 10-12, 2026. There will not be in-person voting this year.
FAQs ABOUT SBDM COUNCILS:
What is the SBDM Council? The SBDM Council is the governing body for this school. It determines school policy for curriculum, staffing, discipline, scheduling, instructional practices, extra-curricular activities and all other matters pertinent to the operation of the school. All SBDM Council policies are designed to help boost student achievement and must be consistent with Jefferson County Board of Education and Kentucky Board of Education policies. More details can be found on the JCPS website: https://www.jefferson.kyschools.us/o/jcps/page/school-based-decision-making
What is the time commitment? A typical month includes one meeting (second or third Thursday of each month) at the school that lasts one hour or less. There may be additional meetings called when there is an urgent or special need to address. State law requires members elected to an SBDM Council to receive training. New council members receive six hours of training. Returning members receive three hours.
Who serves on the SBDM Council? Two parent representatives are elected to the council to represent the views of all parent/guardians and families in the community. Three teachers are elected by the teachers and staff to serve and the Principal serves as the chair of the council.
Who may run for the Council? Any parent or legal guardian of a student who is enrolled in the school during the parent’s term of office is eligible. A parent or legal guardian may not serve if he/she or a relative (including spouse) is employed at a Central Office location or at their child’s school.
What are the terms of office? For the 2025-2026 school year, there will be one parent elected to serve a two-year term. The Chenoweth SBDM Council revised the bylaws so that there will always be an experienced parent serving on the Council. Cristal Fox will be returning to the SBDM Council this year serving the second year of her term.
